SA music legend, Steve Hofmeyr, is finally bringing his revered “Haloda” show to the Garden Route. He’s performing at the Garden Route Casino’s Bravo Lounge on Saturday the 24th of November and fans are urged to book their seats fast.

Fans can expect to be blown away by the show which features songs from his 25th album “Haloda”. With a collection of beautiful romantic songs, Steve's unique interpretation of “We got tonight”, and a balanced mixture of dance-floor hits, the album is captivating and entertaining. “Haloda” marks Steve’s move to new frontiers, with four duets - vocal and orchestralbrilliance with Corlea Botha, rap fun with Emo Adams, smouldering romance with Kurt Darren, and intense emotion with his singing son Armand. “Fans can expect all this and more with the live show,” says Potgieter.

Wine farms a superb addition to second annual Gourmets & Gourmands festival

Gourmets & Gourmands fundraising evening for the Carpe Diem School

The second annual Gourmets & Gourmands fundraising evening for the Carpe Diem School was held on 28 August 2010, and the sell-out event saw guests once again being wined and dined by some of the Garden Route’s finest restaurants. An added attraction this year however was the pairing of each restaurant with a wine farm to take the culinary experience to another level altogether.

The pairing of Garden Route & Klein Karoo restaurants with specially selected wine farms was a new flavour added to the already fragrant evening. Guests were treated to an unrivalled food and wine experience where chefs and wine farms carefully selected the perfect flavour and aroma combinations to guarantee a perfect taste explosion in every bite.

Wine circles in the Southern Cape

One of the companies who managed to get 7 of their wine farms involved in this incredible evening of giving and gourmet is NLR Wines. Owner Nell-Marie le Roux is well-known in wine circles in the Southern Cape and wanted to align not only her brand, but the brands of her restaurants and wine farms to this wonderful cause. When asked about her involvement with Gourmets & Gourmands this year she quite candidly said, “I would like NLR Wines to become synonymous with the Gourmets & Gourmands brand, because we have the same goal at heart – to help a school like Carpe Diem to keep doing the amazing work they are doing and to facilitate, even if in a small way, seizing the day and helping open doors for the kids who attend the school.” NLR Wines represent 12 wine farms in South Africa and supply fine wines of distinction to the restaurant industry. The 7 participating wine farms who came to the party from the NLR Wines stall were Bon Courage (Robertson), Hermanuapietersfontein (Hermanus), Hartenberg (Stellenbosch), First Sighting (Elim), Weltevrede (Bonnievale/Robertson), Raka (Stanford), Ormonde/Ondine (Darling).

Making the event even more spectacular was the auction of incredible experiences, paintings and select wines graciously donated for the occasion, skilfully steered by famed foodie and co-owner of the Eden School of Culinary Art Francois Ferreira.

Through the Gourmets & Gourmands evening, the Carpe Diem School were able to raise an incredible amount of R60 000 to further the school’s important work with the special needs learners in our area. A visibly touched headmaster, Karools Hauptfleish, thanked everyone for their part in the second staging of this glorious event and was extremely excited about the 2011 event that will coincide with the George 200 year celebrations.
So with a sweet treat in one hand and a sip of delectable dessert wine in the other, a toast is raised to another successful event and a dream is cast towards the festival of festivals in George in 2011 and yet another chapter opened for the creative culinary cast to make food and wine pairing magic.

Prior to the gala evening, ladies from Creating Effective Families in [Mossel Bay], Malibongwe [Oudtshoorn], Women Who Care [Knysna] and Phambili [George] are treated to a makeover session every month culminating to the event.

Finalists of the beauty pageant chosen

Facets of the competition kick of in May and culminate to the semifinals, on 20 September when the 12 finalists of the beauty pageant will be chosen to compete for the crown on the gala evening 25 September 2010. Within this competition, we have another two competitions in which 6x well-known designers from the region get an opportunity to design evening ball-gowns for the finalists. At this stage “Overtone”(from the movie “Invictus”), will entertain guests, as well as a fashion extravaganza, during which six of the top Southern Cape fashion designers will present their spectacular creations to the public. Willie Venter, famed choreographer of the Miss SA beauty pageant and “Die Huisgenoot Skouspel” will manage the choreography and present guests with a breathtaking display of beauty and technique. MC’s famous Brumilda van Rensburg and at this stage Michael Moll will make sure that guests experience a memorable event. Miss Garden Route & Little Karoo 2010 will be chosen by a select panel of top flight judges, including representatives from You/Drum Magazine, Die Burger, Media 24, Miss SA along with Miss SA organizer/scout and CEO Calvin Gilfillan of Destinations Cape Routes Unlimited.

The 8th annual Vodashop George Cheese Festival will take place from 10 to 13 June at the Outeniqua Primary School. This year the organizers decided to host the festival during the school holidays to accommodation festival goers.

The festivities kick off on Thursday 10 June with a live music in the Millers Attorneys Entertainment Tent.

Enthusiasts were able to view the 80 cars on show, with the Lion’s Club organising the food and refreshments. From there on, in 1998, the show was hosted at the George Riding club with approximately 250 cars and tractors participating.

In 2000 the show had grown from strength to strength and a larger venue in PW Botha College was found. The venue offers more than enough space for show cars, tractors, motorcycles as well as large grounds for safe public parking. Various motor clubs attend the show annually with the opportunity to participate in a drive past to exhibit their dream wheels. In 2009 more than 800 cars were on show and for next year an even greater number of exhibitors are expected.

With the focus of the show in 2010 being veteran tractors and stationary engines, it should prove to offer an arrangement of exciting subjects for all to enjoy. To compliment the variety of old cars on show, “Arts in the park”, food stalls, a model car show as well as a well stocked beer garden promises to entertain those who have already enjoyed the old car display to its full potential. Special attention will also be given to kiddies’ entertainment, allowing the parents a stress free show experience.

SMART WIN! - Garden Route Casino Mossel Bay

A much delighted Isabella Grebe from George could hardly believe her ears when she was announced the winner of the much desired Smart Passion Cabriolet at the Garden Route Casino on Wednesday evening. This was the grand prize in the Going Smart Promotion which ended on 28 October.

The other contestants were also thrilled to walk away with large amounts of cash. Apart from Isabella, Berthjean Taylor from Mossel Bay won R24 000, Gert Lottering from Dana Bay R12 000 and Catherine Statham from George R2 000.
