Knysna – Garden Route – South Africa

Knysna – Garden Route – South Africa: Oysters galore, indigenous forests, Knysna Lagoon and the world renowned Knysna Heads…

Knysna is the home of the annual Knysna Oyster Festival and the 2003 winner of the “Town of the Year” award. Knysna is located along the scenic route, the Garden Route. Knysna is situated only a mere 36km’s from Plettenberg Bay and 61km’s from George - the Administrative Capital of the Garden Route.

The town of Knysna dates back to 1804 when Sir George Rex arrived in the area. He bought an estate right on the edge of the Knysna Lagoon and moved his family there.

Not only is Knysna known for the indigenous forests surrounding it, but also for the Milkwood Mines. During the gold rush the mines were established about 15km’s outside of Knysna in the indigenous forests. One of the original cottages and the mines can still be visited today.

Knysna is a town with a rich history and one of the biggest tourist attractions in South Africa.

There’s a variety of accommodation establishments to choose from, ranging from Bed and Breakfasts, Hotels, Resorts, House Boats and Self Catering Holiday Homes and Apartments. Rates vary from budget to upmarket and luxury, so you will definitely be able to find something for your specific needs.

Knysna offers tourists and holidaymakers a multitude of things to do and places to visit. Whether you are interested in museums and historical buildings, adventure activities, lazy days in the sun or just sight-seeing – Knysna offers it all!
