Stormsriver Adventures - responsible eco adventure tourism development

Stormsriver Adventures (Pty) Ltd was established in 1998 with the major aim to protect and sustain time sensitive afro mountain indigenous forest through responsible eco adventure tourism development. The Tsitsikamma region along the east coast of South Africa boasts some of the last tracts of unspoilt indigenous forests in Southern Africa. The threat of destructive exploitation of these forests was very real due to the poor socio economic conditions which prevail amongst the local communities.

Stormsriver Adventures committed to eco friendly adventure activities

The major challenge was to ensure that communities surrounding the forest could glean tangible socio economic benefit from this pristine environment. Stormsriver Adventures committed to the development of eco friendly adventure activities which would embrace the local communities by way of job creation, skills development and environmental awareness and education.
The most successful of these eco adventure developments has been the establishment of the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour in 2001.

Construction phase of the Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour

The civil engineering challenges were enormous as no tree could be damaged and strict provisions were laid down by the Department of Forestry. Construction ensured that there was no intrusion in any manner whatsoever into the trees which are giant Yellow woods ranging from 200 to 600 years old. Nothing penetrates the trees and rubber pads protect the bark from damage. No nails or screws are used and decks are clamped around the trunks with protective rubber padding. All cables are padded at the contact points with the trees and expansion devices allow for the tree to grow naturally and uninhibited. The Plantjie Kwekery well known by locals and visitors to George was bought by Frik and Elsa Combrink who officially took over on the 1st of September 2011. The new owners changed the name to George Nursery and are busy with exciting developments and expansions.

The George Nursery will have three divisions - a retail, wholesale and a seedling wholesale section. A much larger stock will be available. The new shop will also stock a variety of garden equipment and accessories. A home industry section with freshly baked products and fresh vegetables will also open soon!

Some of the new features at the George Nursery will include a lapa with braai facilities, an ideal venue for functions and wedding receptions. The Breede River is one of the largest, most navigable rivers in South Africa. You are able to cruise for about 30 km to the river mouth and about 10 km upstream with the Houseboats. The river is tidal for 55 km upstream from the mouth and there are a few sandbanks to keep in consideration when navigating the boats.

A sliding door separates the fore cabin from the main area, providing privacy and an undisturbed sleep to those who need to go to bed earlier. In the fore cabin is a double bed, as well as a single bed. The table arrangement in the main cabin folds down to form the second double bed. A separate compartment houses a hot water shower, wash hand basin and Porta Potty.

Breede River Bird Watching

The outdoor cockpit area is ideal for fishing or just relaxing in the sun on the Breede River. There is an easy access platform with a ladder at the stern for swimming. The rooftop deck is ideal for tanning or bird watching.

Guest on the house boats may sleep anywhere they choose within the designated overnight limits of the Breede River - simply lower the anchor and make sure it is secured.

The boats are only hired as follow with no exceptions.

Kaaimans Kaya in Widerness offers accommodation for up to 14 persons in the main house (Sans Souci), the Waterfall annex and the Far Side Honeymoon suite. Ideal for couples, families and groups. Here you can relax, enjoy the tranquil setting or have a big braai/ “kuier” with friends!

Accommodation on the Kaaimans River

The main house has been a family beach house for the past 100 years and has recently been renovated. All accommodation options have access to the communal outdoor braai and a huge wooden deck with spectacular views of the Kaaimans River and Kaaimans Bridge!

Eco friendly accommodation in the Garden Route

Kaaimans Kaya on the Kaaimans River in the Garden Route offers Eco-friendly accommodation, with no Eskom electricity or municipal water. We are powered by generator and solar power in the evenings, water is supplied from rain water tanks.

Visitors to Kaaimans Kaya can also make use of the row boat and canoe and explore the wonders of the Kaaimans River!

This 100 year old house offers accommodation in 2 bedrooms and a spacious loft with its own wooden deck boasting 180 degree views of the river The kitchen is equipped with cutlery and crockery as well as a 2 plate stove and fridge both powered by gas. The living area with TV, large dining room table and couches opens to the deck area with bar, braai and outside kitchen area. Two additional bedrooms are available in the Waterfall annex.
Main house Bedroom 1: 1 x Double Bed
Main House Bedroom 2: 1 x Double Bed
Main House Loft : 4 x single beds

Waterfall Annex:
Bedroom 1: 1 x Double bed
Bedroom 2: 2 x Single Beds
Separate Shower and toilet.
FAR SIDE HONEYMOON SUITE.
This free standing unit is secluded from the main house and offers a fantastic view of the river, Kaaimans Bridge and ocean. This open plan unit offers simple cooking facilities, double bed and bathroom with toilet and basin. Shower is available in the Waterfall annex.

* Weekend (in Friday afternoon, out Sunday afternoon) – R1000 for weekend
